Haiti, a continuous wound… and the help of AMURT Haiti

AMURT (International Development, Disaster Services, Community Assistance)

AMURT’s Global mission is to help improve the quality of life for the poor and disadvantaged people of the world, and to assist those affected by calamity and conflict. This organization believes that the best assistance is that which encourages and enables all people to develop themselves.

Their programs all over the world are taken place in the 17 following countries:
Albania, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Haiti, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Mozambique, Myanmar, Peru,
Philippines, Romania, Rwanda, Thailand, Uganda, USA, Venezuela

AMURT HAITI has strategy in all of its work is to develop projects in close collaboration with local community networks and in the process, reinforce the capacity of these networks to manage their own projects. A key element in AMURT’s community approach is the training of organizational leadership and the organizing of community networks. To this end, the bulk of AMURT’s project portfolio is dedicated to the management of small-scale community projects.

AMURT has formed and trained community organizations throughout the NW in a variety of competency areas.
For example, AMURT:
– trained six community associations in Bio-sand filter production and distribution,
– three associations in construction and placement of ecological,
– fuel- efficient “rocket” stoves (pictured at right),
– seven associations in the creation and management of tree nurseries,
– three associations in the construction and management of community clinics,
– eleven committees in the construction and rehabilitation of community schools, and in strengthening of school management structures,
– and one association in construction and management of modern salt production facility.

These are only a few examples of the micro projects that AMURT has initiated through its community network spreading over 65 villages and resulting in the organization of more than 1,000 peasants in the NW of Haiti.

AMURT-Haiti takes an integrated approach to development. All of our projects and programs touch several intervention areas. The intervention areas on which AMURT-Haiti and its partners focus are: Education / Community Health / Environment / Infrastructure / Appropriate Tech / Economic Rights / Social Rights / Cultural Rights.

In Greece there isn’t a branch of AMURT. However, there are in Albania, Romania and many other countries in Europe. Specially in Romania exists a programme with the name: Giving All Children a Good Start in Life
For example a Romanian citizen can donate $30 ROM1 for monthly computer lessons for one child in the rural village of Panatau to assist twenty-five of the poorest children
who were malnourished and could not concentrate properly at school.

How wonderful it would be to have a similar action here in Greece….
First, let’s hope for the best for the poor Haiti’s citizens, and then we would think about a possible mission in Greece, too!
